Duke Of Marmalade

Duke Of Marmalade made his way up the ranks with respectable and classy performances in some of Europe's top races, winner of one of his three starts as a juvenile, At three Duke Of Marmalade raced almost exclusively in every major Group one mile race in GB and Ireland, he was placed  in the Irish Champion Stakes,St James Palace Stakes, Eng/Ire 2000 guineas etc he raced six times at three with two seconds one third and three fourths.

Duke Of Marmalade came back as a four year old as a totally stronger and classier horse he got the ball rolling in the Prix Ganay in France at 10F, this was his first Group one win, his next win at the highest level was in the Group one Tattersalls Gold Cup defeating Finsceal Beo his second consecutive Group one, he followed these wins up in the Juddmonte International Stakes, King George, Prince Of Wales Stakes all at 10F these wins earned him a well deserved title of European Champion older horse.

Duke Of Marmalade is an outstandingly bred son of Danehill, Duke Of Marmalade is out of the royally bred Kingmambo mare Love Me True she was a winner of the Group three Killavullen Stakes at two and was placed in a Listed race at Naas. Duke Of Marmalade's 2nd dam is  Lassie's Lady winner of two races in the US, she produced Grade two and three winner Bite The Bullet, and Shuailaan a multiple Listed winner and Graded place.

Duke Of Marmalade's 3rd dam is the outstanding broodmare Lassie Dear a daughter of Buckpasser, she was a Grade three winner who proved a revelation at stud producing Graded/Grade one winners Wolfhound, Weekend Surprise,LemonDropKid and Statue Of Liberty, Weekend Surprise proved also to be a revelation at stud producing champion US sire AP Indy, and Summer Squall. Weekend Surprise is also grand dam of Grade one winner Court Vision, this is from one of the most successful families in USA and in the general stud book.

Duke Of Marmalade comes from a female line with a huge reputation for producing stallions. Duke Of Marmalade's yearlings and foals were as expected in demand at the sales, Duke Of Marmalade was represented by his first two year olds in 2012 getting around twelve individual winners, he didn't produce any stakes winners with his two year olds and it affected him in the sales ring his median sale price for his yearlings that year was only £12,000, some people had suddenly given up on this sire.

However Duke Of Marmalade seems to have turned the tables he sired two stakes winning three year olds just days apart his first stakes winner came with Morning Frost in France and Alive Alive Oh in Ireland both fillies hold classic engagements for 2013 with connections of Alive Alive Oh very optimistic that she can become an Oaks winner, this success has brought bloodstock agents to believe that Duke Of Marmalade is the bargain sire for 2013.

Personally myself I always thought that with Duke Of Marmalade's progeny they would become better horses with age and his recent results have proved that, for me he never had the profile to become a sire of a juvenile Group one winner he himself didn't run in a Group one until his classic year and when he did he put in some fine performances. Im hoping Duke Of Marmalde can keep the ball rolling he is bred to become a nice sire and hopefully it wont be too long more until his progeny can compete and win in Group one level.

First Seaon Sire Focus: Aqlaam

Aqlaam went from being placed on his only start at two years old to become a Group one winner as a four year old when he won the Group one Prix Du Moulin beating the classy Famous Name he followed that up with a second placing behind the mighty mare Goldikova in the Group one Prix Jacques Le Marois which is known as one of the best mile races in Europe. Aqlaam was unbeaten in two starts as a three year old winning the Group three Jersey Stakes at Ascot. at four apart from winning the Group one Prix Du Moulin he was also third and fourth respectively in the Group one Queen Anne Stakes at the Group one Queen Elizabeth II stakes. After a career spanning three seasons with four wins from nine starts to his name Aqlaam was retired to Shadwell Stud in GB.

Aqlaam was a very well bred horse being by Oasis Dream he was out of Bourbonella a daughter of the very successful broodmare sire Rainbow Quest. His dam was unraced but she was a half sister to a high class horse in Persian Punch who became a champion stayer in Europe.

Aqlaam's 2nd dam Rum Cay was a high class broodmare apart from Persian Punch she also produced Island Magic a Group three winner, he won 10 races from the age of 2-7 years old, Classic Punch was another she produced he raced also from 2-7 years and was a multiple Listed winner as well as Group three placed, She also produced another Listed winner in Grand Bahama a Listed winner and Group three performer.

His 3rd dam Oratson was a champion three year old in Italy she had minor success at stud producing multiple Listed winner Gymcrack Premiere, the next dam Orange Cap also produced Listed winners The Abbott and Opera Italiana both were Listed winners in France and Italy.

Aqlaam is a very attractive looking individual his first yearlings in 2012 were athletic individuals his highest priced yearling was E160,000 for a filly at Arqana these were followed by E125,000 for a colt now named Taanif at Tattersalls in Ireland he has been bought to race for Shadwell, other prices include £85,000 X2, £80,000 £75,000 etc. Aqlaam stood his first season at stud for £7,000.
He is set to be represented by just forty six two year olds a surprising number for a young horse that proved himself to be one of the top milers in Europe. Aqlaam should get two year olds through his breeding there is a lot of two year old stakes winners so I can see him getting winners, his first runner today was second on her debut which is extremely encouraging, a fantastic looking individual with a magnificent temperament Aqlaam could surprise a lot of people this year with his juveniles

First Season Sire: Champs Elysees

Champs Elysees is another young sire with a pedigree to make the frame when he will have his first runners in 2013. Champs Elysees was third on his only start at two. A multiple Group three winner and Group three placed at 3 and 4 years old, Champs Elysees was sent for a campaign in the US as a five year old where he became a multiple Grade one winner. A tough and consistent performer he won two Grade ones as a five year old in the Hollywood Turf Stakes and the Northern Dancer Turf Stakes he was third in both the Canadian International and Santa Anita Handicap respectively. Returning at six Champs Elysees won the Grade one Canadian International that was his only Grade one win at six but he still proved to be a very consistent performer running second in the Santa Anita and fourth in the Northern Dancer Turf Stakes. He was shipped back to Britain to his homeplace Banstead Manor Stud where he began his stud career in 2010.

Champs Elysees pedigree needs no introduction by one of the most outstanding sires in Danehill he is out of an equally outstanding broodmare in Hasili  dam of six individual Group/Grade one winners. Champs Elysees is a full brother to Group winner and outstanding sire Dansili as well as Group/Grade one winners Banks Hill (already the dam of Group three winner Romantica by Galileo), Cacique, Intercontinental he is half brother to Ideal World and Grade one winner Heat Haze and also to Deluxe placed twice in the Group one Prix Saint Alary.

His second dam Kerali is the dam of another proven Group one producer in Arrive (a full sister to Hasili) Arrive is dam of Group one winner Promising Lead and Group three winner and Group one placed Visit.

This impressive line up of Group one winners is enough to put Champs Elysees in the frame as a future sire to  be reckoned with he is probably along with his brother Dansili  the most regally bred sire on the Juddmonte Stallion roster and he didn't dissapoint covering half sisters to star horses such as Harbinger,Aqlaam, Look Here and Zafonic they were part of a book that included half sisters to fifty Group winners.

Champs Elysee's strikes me as a sire that could sire some nice fillies but he should also get some nice colts capable of winning at the highest level , he too could be a force to be reckoned with when his offspring are older horses,as he got older himself he got better.

His dam Hasili got Grade one winners in the US and i can genuinely see him siring US winners in time.

First Season Sire Focus: Mastercraftsman

Mastercraftsman proved himself one of the outstanding juvenile's of his generation in 2008 winning the Group one Pheonix Stakes and the National Stakes Group one at the Curragh and the Group two Railway Stakes, he signed off his two year old campaign when finishing fourth to Naaqoos in the Prix Jean Luc Lagadere at Longchamp.

Mastercraftsman proved himself to be an outstanding miler at three though he was unlucky to be born in the same era as the great Sea The Stars. At three Mastercraftsman won the Group one Irish 2000 guineas and then went to Ascot where he won the St James Palace Stakes, always finding another gear when under pressure from Delegator, he ran a superb race when just touched off by Sea The Stars in the Juddmonte International at York over ten furlongs. He was placed  third in a vintage renewal of the Irish Champion Stakes following that placed effort up with a win in the Group three Diamond Stakes he started favorite for the Breeders Cup Mile running a fine fourth  to Furthest Land after two seasons that saw him capture four Group one races Mastercraftsman was retired to stud.

Mastercraftsman is by Danehill Dancer, widely regarded as Danehill's best sire son in Europe having sired over fourteen group one winners. Mastercraftsman is out of Starlight Dreams a winner of two races and placed eight times in the USA, she is a daughter of Breeders Cup winner Black Tie Affair.

Mastercraftsman's 2nd dam is Reves Celestes she is the the dam of Matahif a multiple Listed winner in Denmark and US Listed winner Nobilissme. She is also grand dam of Pressing a dual Group one winner and also Mazuna who was placed in the Group two Park Hill Stakes.

His 3rd dam Tobira Celeste won two races in France and was placed in a Listed race and the Group three Prix De Minerve , she turned out to be a very good broodmare being the dam of champion older horse Celestial Storm, and Thawakhib a Group two winner, she went on to become the dam of outstanding world champion Sakhee. Tobira Celeste also produced minor winner Le Vague A L'ame who went on to produce multiple US Group one winner River Memories.

Mastercraftsman received a strong book of mares in 2010, a very big imposing looking individual his first yearlings stamped quality, and were in demand at the sale's with his highest priced yearling selling for E230,000 this was followed by other six figure lots including E185,000, E160,000, E135,000 £120,000, etc Mastercraftsman's fee for 2013 stands at E12,500. Being a son of Danehill Dancer already proven to be a sire of sires Mastercraftsman has to be considered as one of the favorites for First Season Sire honors. He is expected to have one hundred and thirty five registered two year olds this year.

He should be the type to get nice two year old horses that train on Mastercraftsman was an outstanding three year old and with some top class older horses featured in his pedigree, I would not be surprised to see him sire a major older horse in time

First Season Sire 2013: Born To Sea

Born To Sea was bred to be an outstanding racehorse and was billed up to be the next best thing after the exploits of his half brother Sea The Stars. Born To Sea was by Champion sire Invincible Spirit a son of Green Desert, he was very similarly bred to his outstanding half brother Sea The Stars. Born To Sea is of course out of broodmare legend Urban Sea.

Born To Sea was born the year his half brother hit super stardom although sadly just minutes after he was foaled Urban Sea died from complications so he was raised with a foster mare.Born To Sea was the most expensive foal in the world with his estimated worth being valued at over E2million, his sire Invincible Spirit had proved himself to be an outstanding sire of precocious sprinters.

Born To Sea like his half brother was sent into the care of John Oxx who stated  he was "more precocious then his half brother". Born To Sea made his eagerly awaited debut in the Listed Blenheim Stakes  at the Curragh, despite showing greeness he displayed a brilliant turn of foot to get off the mark on his first start. After his debut Born To Sea was expected to take over the mantle from Sea The Stars but that Listed win would prove to be his only win from eight starts, on just his second start in the Group three Killavullen Stakes he failed to collar in Nephrite though after the race it was announced he had suffered an injury after just two starts at two Born To Sea was put away for a campaign at the spring classics the following season.

Born To Sea's classic season was quite frustrating in the two thousand guineas he pulled so hard for his head that he came in 12th of 18 runners giving himself no chance, his next outing the Irish two thousand guineas at the Curragh he finished 5th to Power showing a great turn of foot in the late stages of the race to snatch that place. Born To Sea put up one of his two career best performances when again in the St James Palace stakes he was beaten into fourth by just under two lengths to the winner Most Improved, his finest effort came in the Irish Derby when he managed to silenced the doubts about his stamina when just beaten by two lengths by Camelot, stepping up to ten furlongs in his last two ever starts Born To Sea was placed behind Famous Name in the Royal Whip stakes Group two before a disappointing run in the Irish Champion Stakes however after that run he was found to have injured himself and was retired to stud.

Because of his pedigree Born To Sea was quickly snapped up for stud duties by Rathaskar Stud in Kildare where he is standing at E10,000. A most amazing looking individual Born To Sea displayed a good turn of foot in his races, he is most defiantly the best bred sire to enter stud since Sea The Stars in 2010.

It is incouraging that his sire Invincible Spirit seems to be shaping into a sire of sires with his other sire son Lawman having produced two individual group one winners Lawman's oldest crop are four year olds in 2013. With the best breeding in the world and a decent effort in some of Europe's top Group one races he is extremely good value for commercial breeders to access the invincible Galileo/Sea The Stars bloodlines.

Born To Sea's foals could possibly sell extremely well next season although he will be competing against the mighty Frankel and others for First Season Sire honours in 2016, this is a young sire who could be potentially very exciting and i would be expecting him to get some nice early type two year olds

Zarkash {Sea The Stars x Zarkava }

Zarkash is one of the most talked about young colts in training at the moment even though he has yet to make his debut Born from two high class racehorses. His sire the six time Group one winning sensation Sea The Stars, his dam Zarkava an unbeaten champion mare. Both have one thing in common they were both epic winners of the best race by far in Europe the Group one Prix De Arc De Triomphe.

From the moment it was announced Zarkava would be bred to Sea The Stars the racing world held its breath in much anticipation of the resulting offspring. Would this colt/filly win a Derby/Oaks 2000/1000G or emulate its parents and win the Arc De Triomphe. Bookmakers  immediately reacted to the mating installing the resulting offspring at 50/1 to win the 2014 Arc.

It is not guaranteed that Zarkash will become a champion racehorse and have that raw ability that his parents had, but he is certainly bred for the job. Both his parents having won from 8F -12F he's sure to be just as effective at those distances. His dam Zarkava won a Group one on only her second ever start as a two year old, while his sire was a late bloomer. While he could prove to be an effective  two year old like all Sea The Stars progeny I would expect him to be able to make the jump into Group one level at three.

Zarkash is set to be trained by his dams handler Alain Royer Dupre in France, now officially classified as a two year old the racing world will be watching with much anticipation when this outstandingly bred colt makes his very eagerly awaited debut.

First Season Sire's 2013: Frankel

Frankel is probably one of the most outstanding and exciting young colts to retire to stud in Europe since the great Sea The Stars just three years previously. Frankel enters stud with an unbeaten race record with 14 perfect wins from 14 starts, 10 of those at Group One Level.

Frankel has been the "perfect product" since his owner/breeder Prince Khalid Abdullah started the operation many years ago. Juddmonte Farms have bred some outstanding horses over the years the most memorable before Frankel was Dancing Brave who before Frankel was the Highest Rated Racehorse in the world. Juddmonte Farms have also bred some outstanding sires and broodmares among the sires they bred include Danehill, Dansili,Oasis Dream among their outstanding broodmares include Razyana (dam of Danehill), Hasili  (Dam of Dansili) and Kind

Frankel's dam Kind was a Listed winning and Group three placed daughter of Danehill. Frankel was her second produce with her first being the Group three winner Bullet Train (by Sadler's Wells) Bullet Train is also standing his first season at stud in USA. In 2009 she again produced another colt by Galileo the Group three winner Noble Mission, all these colts gave their dam the achievement of producing three stakes winner from her first three foals to race. Since then Kind has produced three more offspring Morpheus a three year old colt by Oasis Dream, his two year old full sister Joyeuse and this year amid much anticipation she produced her third foal by Galileo a chesnut colt a full brother to Frankel and Noble Mission, It was no surprise to hear that Kind will again return to Galileo this coming season.

Frankel's 2nd dam Rainbow Lake was also no stranger to success winner of the Group three Lancashire Oaks among her progeny was the high class older horse Powerscourt (by Sadlers Wells). Powerscourt sired a juvenile Group One winner when his daughter Termagent ran out an impressive winner of the Moyglare Stud Stakes however he failed to produce another and is now at stud in Turkey. Rainbow Lake is also the dam of Group Three winner and Group One placed Last Train (by Rail Link).

His 3rd dam Rockfest was Group three placed and is the dam of Listed scorers Vetex and Climber both Listed winners in Italy. His 4th dam Rock Garden was placed at three she didnt have as major a success at stud as her daughter/grand daughters but she is the grand dam of some Listed and Group Three winners in the US.

Frankel's family line traces a long way back to another outstanding race horse in Black Caviar, Frankel's 16th Dam is also the 18th Dam of the Australian wonder mare.

To no surprise Frankel will be supported by an outstanding book of mares with his book limited to a fee of 130 mares but he will also cover a strictly limited book of mares to Southern Hemisphere time, among the mares already scanned in foal are Dandream, Dancing Rain, Midday, Chrysanthemum etc he will cover the best book of mares for a first season sire since Sea The Stars in 2010. Frankel's first crop of foals are expected to be in huge demand when they will be up for public auction in the Autumn/Winter sales in 2014 and we can expect to see some knockout prices for some individuals.

Frankel was a classy two year old himself and went from strength to strength in his next two season i think he will get some nice two year olds, and he can follow the trend set by his paternal half brothers in Teofilo and New Approach who both sired Group One winning two year olds from their first crops with New Approach siring three stakes winners at Ascot 2012 meeting and Teofilo siring Dewhurst Stakes Winner Parish Hall. Teofilo and New Approach like Frankel ,were also European Champion two year olds in 2006 and 2007.

I think he could sire Group horses and i feel his best success will come from his stock bred from Juddmonte's own broodmare band with Frankel being a grandson of Sadler's Wells and  Danehill  he is limited as the majority of best broodmares/racemares he will cover are bred from these lines which will result in a lot of his progeny being inbred 3x3 to both sires.

It helps Frankel that his sire Galileo's first sire sons that retired to stud were successful plus he is from a nice family although his third and fourth dams lacked star quality horses. He is a sire that should get some nice quality horses in the near future and all eyes will be on the anticipation of his already eagerly awaited first foals.

Broodmare Focus: Goldikova

Goldikova was a mare of outstanding quality, winner of no less then fourteen Group One races, she is the only horse ever to win three Breeders Cup Mile races from 2008-2010 respectively. Trained in France by the legendary trainer Freddy Head, Goldikova was ridden in all her 27 races by Olivier Peslier. Goldikova won 17 of them, 14 of those 17 wins were at Group One Level an amazing record for any mare.

Goldikova was bred by the successful Wertheimer et Frere partnership one of France's best breeders she was foaled on the 15th March 2005 in Ireland. Golikova was very well bred being by champion sprinter Anaaba himself a son of outstanding sire of sires Danzig, Golikova is out of the unraced Blushing Groom mare Born Gold who has proved to be a revelation at stud being the dam of two individual Group one winners in Goldikova and Galikova ( a daughter of champion sire Galileo).

Goldikova has lived up to her billing as a champion racemare, but now she faces another test to become a multi million euro broodmare, Golikova's third dam Gold River was also a champion racemare in her homeland winning the 1981 Prix De Arc De Triomphe as well as the Prix Jean Prat and Prix Du Cadran. Gold River became a sucessful broodmare producing  French Group One Winner Riviere D'Oro by Lyhpard a son of Northern Dancer Lyphard became the sire of Alzao also a succesfull sire. Riviere D'or who is Goldikova's 2nd dam also became a sucessful broodmare producing Gold Splash a full sister to Born Gold, another two of her daughters both by Nashwan sold for 340,000gns and 260,000gns respectively at the 1999 and 2005 December Mare Sales, both were bought by Charlie Gordon Watson. Riviere D'or herself made 600,000gns at the 1997 Tatersalls December Mare Sale also bought by Charlie Gordon Watson.

Goldikova's third dam Glaneuse was also a successful racemare, although she failed to win a Group One she was placed in some of the highest races including the Prix De Diane, she was champion racemare in Italy and went on to a successful career in the paddocks.

Through her third dam Glaneuse, Goldikova is a distant relative of another champion mare in Alexander Goldrun (by Gold Away who was also bred by the breeders of Goldikova, Gold Away like Goldikova is also out of a mare by Blushing Groom).

Goldikova retired to stud in 2012 and was bred to champion sire Galileo, in February of this year it was announced she had produced a bay colt and again this year will return to Galileo, (Alexander Goldrun also was bred to Galileo and that progeny is set to race under the Coolmore ownership this year, he has been named as Humphrey Bogart), coincidentally Goldikova boards at Coolmore Stud.

Goldikova's page is filled with  Group one and Group two/three winners/placed under her first three dams, with her 2nd and 3rd dam both successful mares on the track and in the breeding shed, had her dam Born Gold seen the racetrack Im sure she would of been a mare capable of winning at the highest level but she has brought her talent into the breeding shed at 22 years old Born Gold is still producing winners and this year has Anodin a three year old full brother to Goldikova who has an entry for the St James Palace stakes at Ascot, she was also covered by Redoute's Choice this season.

Goldikova has got an unknown future in a bid to become an outstanding broodmare, she may fail miserably, but may carry on her family's trend at producing high class racemares that go on to become high class broodmares. Her first foal has been given every chance to become a champion with Galileo having produced high class filly Lush Lashes from a mare by Anaaba,

As the famous saying in Horse Breeding goes "Success Breds Success" and the Werithemiere's  have certainly done just that

First Season Sire Focus: Bushranger

Bushranger proved himself  one of the best European two year olds of his generation in 2008 winning two Group one races in England and France respectively. Trained by David Wachman he won the Group one Prix Morney in France following up in the  Group one Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket showing a great turn of foot in the process, these wins along with a Group three win at The Curragh in early summer prompted Timeform to give him a rating of 121 Bushranger made his winning debut at 5F in early June at Tipperary he followed that win up with a second placing at Ascot in the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes again at 5F

Stepping up to Group company on just his third outing he duly obliged in the Group three Anglesey Stakes at  The Curragh, that win prompted his connections to step him up to Group one company on his first outing in the highest grade he found Mastercraftsman too good finishing 5 lengths behind in third, taken over to France for the Group one Prix Morney he got off the mark in Group one company finishing half a length in front of Gallagher this was also a record time, on his next start again at Group one level, this time the Group one Middle Park Stakes at 6F he showed a great turn of foot to win again at record time.

Bushranger had his final start at two in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf  finishing 11th beaten over seven lengths by Midshipman in the end. As a three year old Bushranger was unable to find the form as a two year old, on his first start at three he finished fourth to Utmost Respect in the Group three Greenlands Stakes at The Curragh over 6F on Heavy going his next start was an 11th placed finish behind Art Connoisseur in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Ascot, his final run this time was at Haydock for the Betfred Sprint Cup beaten into ninth place by Regal Parade, after a dissapointing display Bushranger retired to his breeders Tally Ho Stud in Mullingar.

Given a fee of around E7,000 Bushranger attracted a book of around 140 mares, His first foals proved very sought out after at the sales with E50,000, E48,000, E45,000 being paid for some of his first foals in 2011, this got some breeders attention and again in his second season he was well supported.

The 2012 Sales brought about his first yearlings, they were very athletic horses with good actioned walk this caught many leading agents eyes and in 2012 his yearlings proved to be extremely popular in Europe his highest priced yearling sold in 2012 was £220,000 paid for a colt out of Pollish Belle at Tattersalls these were followed by other six figures including E220,000, £110,000, £100,000 x2 E80,000, E70,000 etc Yearlings sold by Bushranger at Tattersalls have made a total sale of over £2,000,000, they have averaged £41,667 and the Median is currently £32,000, all these yearlings were conceived at a fee of E7,000

The look of his yearlings have got many people in the bloodstock industry very excited and Bushranger could prove to be a major sire for the Title of 2013 Champion First Season Sire. Bushranger's biggest bred crop will be foals in 2013 as in 2012 after the outstanding sales success of his foals he covered a huge book of mares numbering over 200  naming him the busiest flat sire in Europe in 2012.

Bushranger is a horse of outstanding quality, a very good looking individual he is a grandson of the legendary sire  Danehill, he is out of Danz Danz (Bushranger was her only blacktype winner he also proved to be the first Group one winner under his first three dams) Danz Danz is a mare by leading sire Efisio,. Bushranger himself made around 100,000 when he was sold as a yearling in 2007.

His first yearlings really impressed me and i think he could be a major two year old sire. Bushranger's wins all came on Good Ground and i would expect that come summer 2013 he should start firing in the winners on good going he has already got off the mark with a winner, although i think his progeny could prove very effective at distances under a mile, and Im sure it wont be too long until we see more two year old winners from this extremely exciting young stallion

Stallions for Black Caviar: Lonhro

Australia's darling Black Caviar finally bowed out last week after an incredible career that saw her remain unbeaten in 25 starts 15 of those Group one races, beating over thirty individual Group one winners throughout her career. Black Caviar was a mare of "brutal power wrapped in an elegant machine" now that she has finally retired to the paddocks a new chapter begins in the journey to turn her into a multi million dollar broodmare so the big question is "Who Is The Best Sire For Black Caviar"??

Being a daughter of Bel Espirit a son of the memorable 1990 Breeders Cup Mile Winner Royal Academy himself a grandson of Northern Dancer, Black Caviar is out of the unraced Desert Sun mare Helsinge.

While many people hint it at being between Australia's two leading sires Fastnet Rock and Redoute's Choice, both sons of Danehill  however for me personally create too much inbreeding to Norther Dancer (add to that Danzig and Nijinsky) a mating with Fastnet Rock creates 4x5 to Northern Dancer alone (excluding Danzig and Nijinsky) and with Redoute's Choice creates 4x5x5x6 to Northern Dancer (excluding Danzig and Nijinsky)

With Australian racing/breeding inundated with Danehill sires I feel a different line would be more suitable with Black Caviar and my personal favourite is Lonhro. Lonhro is almost a complete outcross with Northern Dancer appearing once in the 5th generation through his sire Octagonal

Lonhro is an impressive stallion, already well known as one of Australia's best sires with five individual group one winners, hes also an outcross to Danehill and he also has Mr Prospector in his line through his dam's side. Lonhro was voted Australia's champion miler and has already sired multiple group one winner Pierro among others, hes also been very warmly received in the USA. Lonhro also sired Group one winner Denman from a mare by Vain this sire appears twice in Black Caviar's pedigree through her sire and dam

With her half siblings both by Redoute's Choice hoping to carry on her families impressive legacy, the world will be waiting to find out who will be the first mate of Black Caviar and the eagerly awaited first arrival of this once in a lifetime mare

First Season Sire Focus: Sea The Stars

With the Flat season now underway, the attention turns to the list of Freshman sires with their first juvenile runners this season. Among the many impressive line up of First Season sires is 2009 world champion Sea The Stars. This majestic athlete was a 6 time group one winner as a three year old his major wins including the Gr1 stanjames.com 2,000 guineas, The Investic Derby, The Eclipse, The Juddmonte International Stakes, The Irish Champion Stakes and the eminent Prix De Arc De Triomphe. As well as being an outstanding looking individual he possess an outstanding sires pedigree by champion miler Cape Cross a son of the well known sire of sires Green Desert, Sea The Stars is out of the 1993 Arc winner Urban Sea who is also the dam of "The Best Sire In The World" Galileo. As well as being the dam of two Derby winners Urban Sea is also the dam of All To Beautiful and Melikah both placed in the Epsom Oaks, she is also grand-dam of Oaks placed Wonder Of Wonders (Kingmambo x All To Beautiful) , Group two Rockfell Stakes winner Wading (Montjeu x Cherry Hinton)  and 2012 Arc placed Masterstroke (Monsun x Melikah) Sea The Stars dam Urban Sea also possessed a pedigree that suggested she may become a huge influential broodmare she is a daughter of successful sire/damsire  Miswaki (himself a Gr1 winning son of legendary US sire and sire of sires Mr Prospector) out of German bred Allegretta she herself produced classic winner/sire King's Best (Kingmambo) who currently stands in Japan . This incredible page of classic winners and sires puts Sea The Stars firmly on the list as being a sire capable of producing the next generation of classic winners.

Sea The Stars won from distances ranging from 8F to 12F in the space of six months, he was supported by some of the best breeders in the world he attracted a book of 140 mares in his first season the list featured many top class Group one winners or the dams of Group one winners. His first foals sold in 2010 made six figure sums the highest was E850,000 at Goffs for a colt out of Affianced she is already the dam of Group three winner Heliostatic and his classic winning, dual Group one winning brother Soldier Of Fortune both are by Sea The Stars half brother Galileo. His yearlings also didn't dissapoint with E500,000 etc being paid for a colt at Tattersalls out of Yummy Mummy a full sister to five times Group one winner Fame And Glory

Sea The Stars progeny have been praised by trainers with his own handler John Oxx responsible for fourteen of his one hundred and seventeen two year olds registerd with Wetherbys. As Sea The Stars didn't make his debut until July i would not be expecting to see his progeny out until June at least, hes a sire that could sire the odd major two year old but I would be expecting his progeny to really improve from two to three, ranging from distances to a mile onwards while some of his progeny could excel at 10F.

Sea The Stars has been one of the most impressive racehorses to go to stud in a while and with a fantastic race record plus an outstanding book of mares in his first three seasons this is a horse who should go onto better things in the breeding shed. All eyes will be on his eagerly awaited first runner.
