Broodmare Focus: Danedream

Danedream was a formidable mare a winner of eight of her seventeen starts. Five of those wins were at Group one level. Her major wins included the Grossier Von Baden, The King George and the Prix De L'Arc De Triomphe. Danedream is probably one of the best racehorses to come from Germany, where she won three of her five Group one's.

Danedream is by successful German sire Lomitas, himself a champion in his native country. Danedream is out of the un-raced mare Danedrop, herself a daughter of Danehill.

Danedream is her dam's only major offspring to date, Danedrop is also the dam of Accused (Xaar), he made E350,000 when he was sold as a yearling at Goffs to John Warren, he has been placed in minor events, but has disappointed so far. Valdan (Val Royal)  is another of her offspring, he is a minor winner over hurdles. Danedrop's disappointing record at stud was most likely the reason why her daughter by Lomitas only sold for E9,000 at Baden Baden in Germany in 2010. This filly would turn out to be Danedream. After the exploits of her daughter Danedrop was bought privately by Coolmore Stud. It was announced she would visit Galileo, who has had unbelievable success with Danehill sired mares. Its not bad when you consider Danedrop was sold as a broodmare for E47,000 at Goff's in 2005.

Danedream's 2nd dam is the lightly raced Rose Bonbon, she didn't prove herself to become a top class broodmare either producing minor winners Pilgrim's Progress (Entrepreneur) and Mary Martins (Orpen).

Danedream's 3rd dam is the high class Lady Berry, she was a much more successful mare winning the Prix Royal Oak, she became a high class broodmare producing three individual Group one winners in Vert Amande, Indian Rose and Le Nain Jaune, however none of her Group one offspring went on to produce Group one winners or any good stakes horses.

Danedream retired to stud last year, unfortunately she was unable to run in the 2012 Arc due to a fever at her local stables. This meant she could not travel out of Germany. Danedream was bought privately by Teruya Yoshida of Shadai Farm in Japan as a broodmare prospect. She is currently boarding at Newsells Park Stud  and is in foal to Frankel. That mating has got many racing fans excited about the resulting offspring.

Danedream, like all top class racemare's that retire to stud has an unknown career in the breeding shed, her progeny may never have that ability she had no matter what sire she is bred to. Danedream's female line is weak when it comes to Group one producers, her third dam Lady Berry is the only mare to produce Group one offspring and she is also the only Group one winner in her first three dams which is disappointing and concerning for me personally. There is no top class horses mentioned under her first two dams and also Lady Berry's offspring proved disappointing at stud.

Danedream has been given a good start at stud with the unbeaten Frankel as the sire of her first foal. It is expected that she will eventually be shipped to Japan to foal and I would imagine be eventually bred to Japan's top sire Deep Impact which I think could produce a good horse. Danedream is only a handful of mares to go stud having won the Prix De L'Arc De Triomphe, she proved an outstanding mare on the track and hopefully she can pass on those traits. Regardless of her breeding, she has to be one of the exciting racemare's to retire to stud.

National Hunt Sires: Gold Well

The unraced Gold Well moved to Coolmore's jumps roster in 2012 after standing at Arctic Tack Stud. Gold Well's first crop contained exciting horses such as Joxer, Holywell,John's Spirit, Mr Watson and Legacy Gold. The outstanding results from his first runners both on the track, at point to points and in sales ring prompted Coolmore to purchase him in December 2011.

Gold Well is not only by Sadler's Wells the proven sire of sires, he is out of Floripedes making him a brother to outstanding sire Montjeu. Montjeu needs no introduction, already well known as one of the best flat sires. Montjeu has got equally high class horses over jumps most notably Noble Prince and the outstanding sixteen times Grade one winning hurdler Hurricane Fly.

Gold Well's store horses have sold for £250,000, €200,000. His bumper winning daughter Legacy Gold lit up the Brightwells sale at Cheltenham this year when selling for £210,000. Gold Well is extremely great value for commercial breeders at €5,000 to access his impeccable pedigree and Gold Well has proved with his early crop that he can get top quality horses.

Coolmore already have exciting sire son of Sadler's Wells in Milan sire of grade one winning hurdlers Jezki and the ill-fated Darlan. Gold Well looks sure to follow up in that success. A horse of impeccable good looks his early success has hinted that he should be a major sire of top quality jumps horses in the future.

Beneficial the loss of one of Ireland's best National Hunt sires

Beneficial retired to Sean Kinsella's Knockhouse Stud in Co. Kilkenny in 1997. A winner of six of his twenty five starts three of them in stakes company. Beneficial won from distances of 7-12F. A winner of two of his three starts at two. At three Beneficial won the Listed Dee Stakes and the Group two King Edward, he was also third in the Group three Girdin Stakes. At four he won the Group three Scottish Classic and was third in the Group One International Stakes in the USA. He was also placed in the Group three Select Stakes and the Group three Prix Gonhaurt Biron.

Beneficial is by top class sire Top Ville. Top Ville is also sire of other leading NH sires in Un Desperado and Norwich who both also sired top class jumps horses. Top Ville also became a top class Broodmare sire. he is the dam sire of leading NH sires Montjeu and his full brother Gold Well. Top Ville is also sire of Darara and Princess Pati who both went on to be Group one winners on the flat.

Beneficial is out of three time winner Youthful. She is also the dam of Jeune who became a top class horse in Australia winning the Queen Elizabeth and the Melbourne Cup. Youthful is also grand dam of Puntal, a Graded winner over hurdles in England.

Beneficial's 2nd dam is First Bloom who was champion two year old filly in France. She is the dam of Group winners First Prayer and Water Lilly. She is also grand dam of Group one winner Talinum and Group winner Gharam. This is from the immediate family of Blue Bajain, a multiple Graded winner over hurdles and also placed in the Christmas hurdle and Flying Fifth hurdles both at Grade one level.

Beneficial made his way impressively up the ranks through the years getting top class horses including Cooldine, Mount Benbulben, Benneficient, GVA Ireland, Cruising Katie, Monksland, MakeYourMark, WhateverJackSays, Benash, Sweet Kiln, Realt Dubh, Gangadu etc.
Stock by Beneficial have sold for £250,000, €170,000, £117,000 €100,000 €80,000, €75,000, €65,000, while others sold in 2012 have made €30,000 or more.

Beneficial had the amazing ability to upgrade his mares into Grade one producers. He covered an average book of mares in his first few seasons but the talent shown from his progeny have brought him right up at the top of the ladder, covering well over 100 mares in a season. He covered 124 mares last season.

Beneficial sadly passed away in March of this year just as he was beginning to cover mares, although he did manage to cover some of his book. About 16 mares had reportedly been covered up until the time if his death. Beneficial was crowned champion National Hunt sire in 2012/2013 season beating Presenting, Kings Theatre, Oscar, Kayf Tara, Flemensfirth. He was also champion Point To Point sire.

Beneficial will be a huge loss to jumps breeders both in Ireland and Britain. He proved to be a top class sire of top quality jumps horses at an affordable fee and every year the quality of his stock got bigger and better. Thankfully Beneficial's progeny will be around for some time to come and with the best foals from his best book of mares still to come. however a huge gap will need to be filled in the jumps stallion ranks to fill the legacy left by this top class stallion.

Broodmare Focus: Zarkava

Zarkava retired to stud in 2009. She ended her career unbeaten in seven races with a remarkable six of them at Group one Level. Trained in France by Alain Royer Dupre for her owner and breeder HH The Aga Khan. Zarkava ran in the Prix Marcel Boussac on just her second ever start beating some of Europe's best fillies.
At three she won the Prix De Diane, Poulenc d'essai des pouliches beating Halfway To Heaven and Goldikova, the Prix de la Grote, Prix Vermeille and her biggest and most amazing success the Prix De Arc De Triomphe beating a high class field.

These victories earned Zarkava the well deserved title of European Champion three year old filly and EU horse of the year. After her Arc success Zarkava was retired to stud.

Zarkava was foaled in March 2005 at the Aga Khan's Gilltown Stud. By Zamindar, a successful sire for Juddmonte Farms she is out of the unraced mare Zarkasha. Zarkasha is also the dam of Zarkandar a successful horse over hurdles, she has a two year old filly by Sea The Stars and will visit New Approach this coming season.

Zarna is her 2nd dam a winner one race from seven starts. Zarna is the dam of Listed winner and Group placed Zarannda and minor winner Zarlana. She is also grand dam of miner winners Zaralabad and Smart Red both winners over hurdles.

Zarkava's 3rd dam is Zahra, she is the dam of Listed placed Zallaka. This is from the family of the high class Petite Etoile who is Zarkava's 4th dam.

Zarkava became the only real high class filly to come from her family for a while since her fourth dam, her dam Zarkasha was unraced but her 2nd and 3rd dams had no major success on the racecourse nor did many of their offspring. This however Would not put me off in thinking Zarkava won't be a successful Broodmare although she has an unknown future ahead in a bid to become an outstanding mare.

Zarkava's first foal is Zerkani a daughter if fellow Arc winner Dalakhani, this three year old has yet to race an is currently with Alain Royer Dupre. Zarkava made history when she was mated with another Arc winner in the mighty Sea The Stars. the resulting foal, a colt has been ZARKASH and is in training also with Alain Royer Dupre. Zarkava also has a Galileo yearling colt , a colt foal by Dubawi and is currently in foal to Redoute's Choice.

Unsurprisingly Zarkava's progeny have got a lot of attention most notable Zarkash. The only negativity surrounding Zarkava as a Broodmare personally for me is her 2nd and 3rd dams fairly poor record at stud. But her own dam has gone on to prove herself at stud so hopefully Zarkava can do the same.

She has been bred to the best sires out there and I would love to see her visit a Juddmonte sire in time as her sire is a Juddmonte bred horse. Zarkava is open to Danehill and Sadler's Wells sire lines and I think she could do well with Dansili or Oasis Dream.

Freshman Sires: MyBoyCharlie

MyBoyCharlie was a very precocious two year old. He ran four times as a two year old winning three times including Group and Group one company. Trained by Tommy Stack MyBoyCharlie was snapped up by John Magnier after his impressive Group three Anglesey Stakes win. He followed that up with a win in France in the Group one Prix Morny and was also third in the Group one National Stakes behind New Approach.

MyBoyCharlie ran five times at three winning only once, making no real impression. He failed to find his form he had at two.

He shares his sire Danetime with another Group one winning two year old and exciting fellow freshman sire Bushranger. MyBoyCharlie is out of Delceata an unraced daughter of Rousillon. She is the dam of six winners with MyBoyCharlie her only black type winner.

MyBoyCharlie's 2nd dam is the Listed winner Snowtop she is the dam and grand dam of multiple Group and Listed horses including the Group one placed pair Kendam and Asset.

His third dam the Group three winner Icing is dam of US Group one winner Al Hareb. She is grand dam of Grade two winners Hayaq and Shibl.

MyBoyCharlie initially stood at the National Stud in UK but is now standing in France at a fee of E5,000 he also shuttles to Australia where from his first southern hemisphere bred crop he sired two stakes placed juveniles. MyBoyCharlie's first yearling sold in 2012 in Northern Hemisphere with his yearlings in demand making six figures such as £160,000, £145,000, £135,000, E75,000 and E80,000 etc.

Trainers have praised his progeny saying they are "well made, precocious types with good minds, real trainers horses". These are encouraging signs.

MyBoyCharlie like his paternal half brother Bushranger should be a serious sire to be named Champion First Crop sire 2013. He should get good two year olds and should sire plenty of winners when ground is suitable, he should be firing a lot of winners by summer. He is a nice asset to French breeders and Is a beautiful looking well made individual capable of getting some high class two year olds, he's a serious sire to watch out as the season progresses.

First Season Sires 2013: Excelebration

Excelebration retires to stud at Coolmore as one of the top milers in racing a winner of eight of his fifteen career starts Excelebration was never out of the first three in all his starts and he is known as the horse who was very unlucky to encounter superstar Frankel as he was second to him in four Group one races. Excelebration won three top class mile races in Europe including the Group one Prix Jaques Les Marois, Queen Elizabeth stakes and the Prix Du Moulin.

Excelebration is a son of Exceed And Excel a top class sire in both hemispheres, he is out of the Indian Ridge mare Sun Shower, herself a winner of three races in France where her son won two of his group ones, she was placed a further eight times. She is also the dam of Mull Of Killough a Group winning son of Mull Of Kintyre before her sons exploits Sun Shower was sold as a Broodmare to India but has since been privately bought back by Coolmore, it was announced she would visit Galileo.

Excelebration's 2nd dam is the once race mare Miss Kemble, she is the dam of Kingso a winner at two in France and placed. His 3rd dam is the dual group one winner Sarah Siddons a winner of the Irish 1,000 G and Yorkshire Oaks she was a very successful Broodmare producing Irish Oaks winner Princess Pati, this Is from the family of 1998 EU champion filly Leggera.

Excelebration is a beautiful looking sire son of a very high class and popular sire Exceed And Excel who also has another exciting sire son in Ireland in Helmet a champion in his native Australia. Excelebration is sure to be given every chance by Coolmore and is expected to cover a high class book of mares in both hemispheres. He's a very exciting sire and next year will surely be a big year with his first foals.

Excelebration should get plenty of juvenile winners a winner of two of his three starts at two he progressed extremely well at three to be campaigned exclusively at Group one and Group level, A high class miler bettered only by Frankel and Black Caviar he has the makings to be a lovely sire for the future.

Monday 6 May 2013

First Season Sire Focus: Archipenko

Archipenko has to be one of the most regally bred sires in the world a winner of six of his seventeen starts including 5 group races in three continents Archipenko now stands at Lanwades Stud in UK.

Archipenko won one race at two from three starts trained in Ballydoyle at the time. At three Archipenko won the Group two Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial his only success that year, later that year he was sold to join Mike De Kock's stable in SA there as a four year old he won the Grade one Queen Elizabeth II cup and was a multiple Graded winner in SA and Hong Kong.

He  has superb breeding by leading American stallion Kingmambo, he is out of regally bred mare Bound a Nijinsky three parts sister to champion sire Nureyev and Fairy Bridge the dam of world class sires Sadler's Wells and Fairy King.

Archipenko's 2nd dam is of course Special the dam of Nureyev and Fairy Bridge, she is also dam of US sire Jade Robbery, Numerous and Add the dam of Group winning Lizard Island. Through Special Archipenko is from the family of Corinthian, and 2011 BC winner Wrote.

The 3rd dam Thong is the dam of another champion sire and Irish Champion two year old in Thatch she is also dam of King Pellinore a multiple US Grade one winner, this is from the family of Irish 2,000 guineas winner Bachelor Duke as well as German champion and sire Soldier Hollow and Japanese champion El Condor Passa, and also Group winners Festive Hall and Docksider.

Archipenko's first crop are two year olds this season with some nice athletic individuals his first yearling sold for prices of £64,000, £50,000, £47,000, £32,000 etc. they averaged over 4x his fee. Archipenko is a sire that strikes me because of his classic pedigree which is full of top class horses, sires and broodmare's too numerous to mention.

I do think he should get some juvenile winners and it will be interesting to see how his progeny progress on. Archipenko will have around Forty Six two year olds representing him for 2013 and I would be surprised if he doesn't get a winner, going by his pedigree he has the makings to be a top sire and hopefully he can make a name for himself at stud. A lovely individual with a magnificent pedigree Archipenko has it all to do for himself this season.

Sunday 5 May 2013

New Approach

New Approach retired to Darley's Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket as an unbeaten champion two year old and Epsom Derby winner with a superb  pedigree to make it as a future sire. New Approach was the winner of four Group one races he ran 11 times with eight wins four at Group one level New Approach was never out of the frame in all his starts finishing runner up in both the Eng/Ire 2,000 guineas to HenryTheNavigator and third in the Juddmonte International to Duke Of Marmalade those were his only defeats.
New Approach is by the hottest sire in the world Galileo he is out of champion mare Park Express, a winner of five races from 2-3 years including The Irish Champion Stakes Group one, the Nassau back then it was a Group two and the Group three Lancashire Oaks she was second in the Yorkshire Oaks and third in the champion stakes at Newmarket, a race her son would eventually win and also break the track record.

Park Express brought her talent to the breeding shed among her progeny are Alluring Park , Dazzling Park ,  these mares turned out to be outstanding broodmares with Alluring Park producing Was also by Galileo she was the winner of the 2012 Epsom Oaks, Dazzling Park is the grand dam of champion two year old Alfred Noble, among Park Express's other colt's was Shinko Forest a top class horse in Japan and later a successful sire.

New Approach's 2nd dam is Matcher she is the grand dam of Australian Group two winner Forest Express and also to German champion Waky Nao. His 3rd dam Lachine produced one blacktype winner Quick Selection though she is the dam of US Graded winners Charge My Account and Miss Audimar, Miss Audimar later produced Group two Voltigeur Stakes winner Bandari.

This impeccable list of breeding was enough to secure New Approach with a decent shot at stud, he was given every chance with his first foals being the offspring of 95 stakes winners/producers his first yearlings auctioned in 2011 made some top prices including E200,000, £160,000 £135,000, £120,000, £125,000 etc.

New Approach has got off to a tremendous start at stud producing unbeaten Group one winning and now classic winner Dawn Approach, he also produced three Ascot stakes winners with his juveniles  the first sire ever to accomplish that feat, among his other smart juveniles were Newfangled who looked a top class filly before sadly having to be put down. New Approach has been well received in Australia where he has supplied some stakes winners he looks a force to be reckoned with.

New Approach has sired two stakes winners so far with his first classic crop when today his daughter Talent won the Listed Pretty Polly stakes.

New Approach will cover a fantastic book of mares this season already in foal is Coronation Stakes winner Fallen For You as well as unbeaten two year old filly Lyric Of Light and outstanding producer Zarkasha the dam of champion filly Zarkava.

With the classic season just under way it will be interesting to see how other New Approach progeny will fare but there is no denying that this is a serious quality and potentially very exciting young sire

Red Clubs the loss of a highly promising young stallion

Today was a great day for Tally Ho Stud in Mullingar as their homebred filly Sky Lantern won the Group one 1,000 guineas at Newmarket on the back of winning the Group one Moyglare Stud Stakes as a two year old, however today was also a reminder to Tally Ho at just how much of a loss their former sire Red Clubs will be to the breeding industry.

Red Clubs retired to Tally Ho in 2008 after a successful career which saw him become on of Europe's best sprinters. He was a very precocious two year old winning the Group two Coventry Stakes at Ascot and ran a fine second in the Middle Park Stakes Group One and was third in the Phoenix Stakes. At three Red Clubs won the Group two Diadem stakes and also the Group three Greenham. As a four year old Red Clubs showed his best form winning his first Group one in the Sprint Cup he also was placed in the Group one Golden Jubilee, the Nunthorphe Stakes and the July Cup he proved to be an outstanding sprinter.

Red Clubs was by Red Ransom out of Two Clubs a mare by First Trump, Two Clubs was a high class mare herself winning the Group one Middle Park Stakes and the Group two Richmond, her best form came as a two year old, Red Clubs remains her only black type winner to date.

Red Clubs 2nd dam Miss Cindy is a full sister to top class sprinter Petong, she is the dam of 8 winners with Two Clubs her most precocious foal, she is also grand dam of stakes winners Joint Aspiration and Online Investor.

His 3rd dam Iridium is the dam of top sprinters Petong, Maestro Checco, this is from the family of Germany's best sire and also world class sire Monsun.

Red Clubs first foals made prices of E82,000 and £54,000, he sired 34 individual two year old winners in 2011, his best offspring from his first two crops are Group one/Group winners Vedelago ,The Gold Cheongsam, Ceiling Kitty and Sky Lantern, Sky Lantern and Ceiling kitty were both among his second crop and Sky Lantern is already a dual Group one winner at two and three while Ceiling Kitty won the Group two Queen Mary Stakes.

Red Clubs died in 2011 as a result of an injury he sustained while covering a mare at Tally Ho his premature death has become something of a loss to the breeding industry as there is a question surrounding him as to what else could he have produced at stud with The Racing Post commenting that "the premature death of Red Clubs has robbed the industry of a highly promising young stallion."

Galileo the next best thing

Galileo is now widely considered the best sire in Europe since his own great sire Sadler's Wells, although Galileo has a long way to go yet to replicate his sire's remarkable 14 consecutive Champion Sire Title he is certainly doing it the right way.

Galileo's first sire title came in 2008 after he sired Derby winner New Approach and he also sired the classy filly Lush Lashes Galileo finished placed in 2009 but regained his title in 2010 and has not lost it since siring horses of the calibre as Misty For Me, Cape Blanco, Frankel, Galikova, Great Heavens, Nathaniel, Maybe, Was, New Approach ,Lush Lashes etc.

Galileo's first sire son was classic winner Sixties Icon a regally bred son of two Epsom winners Sixties Icon was a dominant winner of the St Leger, he became one of the leading First Season Sires after a huge year with his two year olds.

New Approach Galileo's only epsom derby winner to date also got off the mark in style he became champion first season sire in 2012 after a record breaking year that saw him sire three Ascot Stakes winners in a week {the only sire to do so} and he also sired European champion and unbeaten two year old and now classic winner Dawn Approach who yesterday landed the 2000Guineas at Newmarket on his seasonal debut a first classic win for his sire and he is also the first grandson of Galileo to win the 2,000G.

Galileo's dual group one winning son and fellow EU champion two year old Teofilo is also a sire doing quite well with two individual group one winners to his name like New approach he stands under the Darley Roster.

Red Rocks a BC winning son of Galileo recently got off the mark as a two year old sire with his very first runner recently he stands at stud in Italy.

Galileo is also heavily sought out after in the US with his three times US Grade1 winning son Cape Blanco being North America's busiest sire covering over 200 mares his first crop are foals, other exciting young sires coming along are Nathaniel , Frankel and Rip Van Winkle standing at Newsells Park, Juddmonte Farms and Coolmore respectively.

Since he retired to stud in 2002 Galileo has sired over thirty individual Group one winners a remarkable record for still a relatively young sire and with more talent on the way plus some extremely exciting sire sons it looks like the reign will be Galileo's for some time.

Thursday 2 May 2013

Freshman Sires: Dandy Man

Dandy Man was a model of consistancey racing from 2-6 years. He became a multiple Group and Listed winner winning the Palace House Stakes Group three, the Woodlands Stakes Listed ,the Danehill Dancer Tipperary Stakes Listed and the King Of Beers Stakes Listed. he was second in the Group one Kings Stand Stakes and placed in the Nunthorphe Stakes, King George Stakes and Dubai World Trophy.  He became a top class sprinter.

Dandy Man was one of many other top class horses from champion sprinter Mozart's only foal crop, he was out of Group three Angelsey and Molecomb stakes winnner Lady Alexander herself a daughter of Night Shift. Lady Alexander is the dam of five winners including Dandy Man, Lady Shanghai, Elegant Way, Good Authority, Dandy Man remains her only blacktype winner to date she has a yearling filly by fellow sprint sensation Star Spangled Banner.

Dandy Man's 2nd dam Sandhurst Goddess won a Listed race at three and four and was also Group placed she is the grand dam of Group three placed fillies Without A Trace and Many Colours. his 3rd dam Paradise Bird is the dam of Austrian champion three year old Amadhla as well as Listed winner Cover Girl, who is the dam of multiple Group placed Mister Mannan and Shermeen both are by Desert Style. His 4th dam Fred Darling is the grand dam of useful sprinter Malhub, this is from the immediate family of Group three winner Yellow Rosebud.

Dandy Man currently stands at Ballyhane Stud at a fee of E4,000, he is a beautiful athletic horse and passed those traits on to his yearlings who were in big demand in 2012. his highest priced yearling was a colt now named Android who cost £75,000 this was followed by prices such as £57,000, £55,000 £52,000, £50,000 etc with the majority of his yearlings with all the top trainers.

It is not surprising to see Dandy Man also sire a lot of juvenile's he himself was very useful at two and he joins Amadeus Wolf another son of Mozart who also was a good two year old sire. Dandy Man currently has three winners and there will be plenty more winners from him as the season progresses Dandy Man progeny should also progress with age as when there sire became a top sprinter from three onwards. Dandy Man looks sure to go close in the Title for Freshman sire 2013.

Freshman Sires: Captain Gerrard

Captain Gerrard ran a remarkable 10 times as a two year old winning five of them including the Group three Cornwalls Stakes at Ascot he was also a multiple Listed winner and finished placed in the Molecomb Stakes and Flying Childers Stakes. At three Captain Gerrard won the Group three palace house stakes, and was fourth in the Group two Prix Du Grois Chene at Chantilly. He didn't manage to win at four but was placed in some Group races and was fourth in the Group one Kings Stand Stakes.

Captain Gerrard is a son of leading sire Oasis Dream out of the Soviet Star mare Delphinus. Delphinus is the dam of Group two placed and Hong Kong Listed winner Saturn, Captain Gerrard is also a half brother to useful sprinter Glocca Morra.

His 2nd dam Scimitarra won three races at two and three years she is the dam of four winners including minor winners Deserve and Relativity. Through his third dam Fanghorn Captain Gerrard is from the family of some outstanding horses including Double Form, Smaoineamh, Eva Luna, Sholokov, Soldier Of Fortune Chuis Ghaire and Intense Focus.

Captain Gerrard retired to stand at Mickley Stud in the UK at a fee of £3,500 he covered over 100 mares in his first year. Captain Gerrard struck me as a beautiful looking horse capable of siring two year old winners, his own sire Oasis Dream in my opinion is an extremely exciting sire of sires in the making with some outstanding quality sire sons at stud including Captain Gerrard.

Captain Gerrards first yearlings made prices of £20,000 £19,000 etc which was a bargain considering at the moment he is firing in the juvenile winners and currently leads the Freshman Sire List with four individual winners Captain Gerrard failed to win a Group one but that doesn't mean his progeny wont, hes sure to get very speedy types and this is a sire to watch out for as the season progresses.

Wednesday 1 May 2013

Paco Boy

Paco Boy went from winning a conditions race at Newmarket at two years to becoming a triple Group one winner. Paco Boy was a consistent horse from the minute he raced winning two of his three starts as a two year old. Paco Boy was one of those horses that went from "Rags To Riches". Returning at three he scored in  a Listed race at Lingfield following that up in the Group two Lennox Stakes, Greenham and Hungerford Stakes before breaking his Group one duck in the Group one Prix De La Foret in France. Paco Boy ran third to Goldikova in the Group one Prix Du Moulin but was disqualified and placed last. At four Paco Boy ran fourth in the Group one Lockinge Stakes following that win he got off the mark again at Group one level when scoring in the Group one Queen Anne he followed that up with placed efforts in the Group one Sussex Stakes and July Cup. As a five year old Paco Boy raced exclusively at Group one Level getting his season off to a flyer when scoring in the Lockinge Stakes that was to be his last Group one win but he was placed in the Group one Prix De La Foret, Queen Anne, Prix Jaques Le Marois, Prix Du Moulin, he finished his career when running a fine fourth to his old nemesis Goldikova in the Breeders Cup Mile. Through his career Paco Boy raced 23 times winning 11 including three Group ones.

Paco Boy is a son of Desert Style, himself a son of sire of sires Green Desert, Desert Style sired four individual Group one winners during his time he spent as a sire in Ireland , Desert Style now stands in France at a fee of E5,000. Paco Boy is out of Tappen Zee a mare by Sandhurst Prince, she won twice from as many starts and placed four times. she is the dam of Zachouv a 1998 full sister to Paco Boy, she won twice at two and was placed also at two and three, Paco Boy remains his dams only Blacktype winner to date.

Through his 2nd dam Rossaldene Paco Boy's dam is a half sister to Cape Town he is also a son of Desert Style he was a Listed winner and placed in the Group one Irish 2,000 guineas. Rossaldene is also dam of Listed winners Regiment, Greens Fernely, and Lammastide who is the dam of Listed scorer Harvest Warrior, Paco Boy is also related to Gypsy Johnny who was placed in the UAE 2000 guineas. Paco Boy's third dam Palestra is the dam of one blacktype winner in Hungarian Listed winner Perry Gold and also Listed place Cyprus Sky.

Paco Boy retired to stand at Highclere stud for a fee of £8,000 his first foals have been well received at the sales with the highest price being E75,000, his next highest price was £54,000 £50,000 £40,000 etc he has his first yearlings this year.

Paco Boy is an extremely attractive individual who trained on very well to become a Group one winner after winning a conditions race at two, if his offspring show the same enthusiasm as their sire did, they will be a must have in every trainers yard.

Paco Boy looks to be the type of sire that will get two year olds that will progress on and I can see him proving popular in France where he won the Prix De La Foret. I would expect his yearlings to be in demand this coming sales season.

Montjeu as a sire of sires

Montjeu proved to be one of the best sires at stud siring four Epsom Derby winners and three Irish Derby winners including Motivator Eng Derby 2005, Authorized Eng Derby 2007, Pour Moi Eng Derby 2011 and Camelot Eng Derby winner 2012 his Irish Derby pair were Hurricane Run 2005 , Frozen Fire 2008 and Camelot 2012. Their exploits brought their sire to stardom in the breeding shed. Montjeu has sired over twenty individual Group one winners. When Montjeu's first sons retired to stud, breeders flocked with their mares in the hope that his sire sons could replicate their sires outstanding early success and produce a potential derby horse.

His most illustrious son to become one of his first stallion sons was Motivator the 2005 Derby winner, retired to Highclere Stud in England at a high price fee. Many of the worlds leading breeders/owners became shareholders and he covered a book of 135 mares. Motivator's first few foal crops didnt make much of an impact even though he sired Group two winner Pollenator and Group three winner ClinicaL, Motivator finally broke his Group one duck when the Aga Khan bred Ridasiyna won the Group one Prix D'Lopera in France not surprising Motivator now stands in France at a fee of E7,000. In 2007 Montjeu's Irish derby and Arc winner Hurricane Run was snapped up for stud duties, he was set to stand alongside his sire. Hurricane Run had a race record exactly like his sire before him.

Hurricane Run sired fifteen individual two year old winners and many believed this sire could take up the mantle beside his own sire however his three year olds didn't make much impression although he did get Derby placed Memphis Tennessee in 2012 Hurricane Run sired Grade two Futurity Stakes winning two year old First Cornerstone. Hurricane Run is now standing at stud in Germany for 2013.

His next big race winning son to retire to stud was Authorized when he retired under the Darley banner in 2008. Authorized again didnt sire anything major getting some two year old winners again his first classic crop didnt fire and he again proved to be another son of Montjeu that dissapointed although he sired Group three winner Rehn's Nest in April of 2013 Authorized still has an awful lot more to prove at stud.

Montjeu sadly died in March of 2012 from blood poisoning his last crop of foals in 2013 numbers approximately 31. Montjeu was a magnificent sire but a shadow has been cast over his inability to produce a sire son at stud the previous named sons have proved to be disappointing.

However Montjeu's luck may change representing him at Coolmore in 2013 is his 2011 Derby winner Pour Moi this extremely good looking sire has a lovely pedigree being out of a Darshaan mare his first foals are very attractive individuals, and they look set to play a role when they will be auctioned off later in the year. Another young sire son that catches my eye is 2008 Irish Derby winner Frozen Fire this extremely good looking sire has his first foals this season and he really stamps his stock, Frozen Fire has the ability to get horses both on the flat and under NH rules and he could also get a top older horse in the future.
Fame And Glory represents Montjeu on the national hunt scene where his sire has had outstanding success getting Hurricane Fly, Noble Prince etc, this five time Group one winner looks sure to become a big hit.

Camelot is probably for me the most exciting son of Montjeu that looks set to retire to stud for 2014 he missed out narrowly in a bid to capture the Triple Crown he is very well bred being out of a Group three winning daughter of Kingmambo, Camelot will further enhance his value for stud this season and he is sure to be in big demand when he does retire.
Montjeu's classy older horse St Nicholas Abbey looks another nice future prospect at stud when he will  presumably be retired in 2014
