Broodmare Report: Filia Regina

A winner of a minor race as a three-year-old, Filia Regina on pedigree alone was always destined for a career in the paddocks. She resides at her owner and breeders Stanley House Stud in Newmarket. A daughter of Coolmore colossus, Galileo. She is out of multiple Group 1 heroine Ouija Board who  needs little introduction having won the Epsom and Curragh Oaks double as well as The Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Turf twice in what was an outstanding globetrotting racing career. Ouija Board then transitioned from successful racemare to a successful broodmare. Her best foal is undoubtedly dual Derby winner and Filia Regina's full-brother Australia who is beginning to establish his own success as a stallion for Coolmore. Ouija Board is also the dam of Australian Group winner Voodoo Prince, a son of Kingmambo and multiple Group winning Frontiersman, a son of Dubawi who has sice began a stallion career at Overbury Stud.

Filia Regina is still relatively in the early years of her second career as a broodmare. Her sire Galileo has firmly established himself as one of Europe's top broodmare sires and with her dams achievements she certainly has every chance to produce a Group winner. She has been given the best possible chance of succeeding. Her first foal was Best Blue, a son of Oasis Dream, he got his dam off to a good start by becoming her first winner from her first runner. Best Blue later changed hands at the Tattersalls July Sale in 2018. Her next offspring is Zoran, a four-year-old colt by Invincible Spirit who is also a winner. Zoran subsequently changed hands at the Autumn Horses in Training sale at Tattersalls last year selling for 77,000 guineas. Since then she has visited Darley's prolific stallion Dubawi on a number of occasions. The only resultant progeny of this mating to have raced has been Persepone who was well beaten on her only start in January of last year.

Filia Regina has an unraced three-year-old colt named Adrastus, by Dubawi, a two-year-old filly also by Dubawi and a yearling colt by the exciting Kingman. A sire I personally would like to see this mare visit is Lope De Vega who is recognized as one of the best young up and coming sires in Europe. He represents a nice cross for Filia Regina and has a strong strike rate with daughters of Galileo. It remains to be seen whether Filia Regina can transition into a top broodmare but early results show that the future looks intriguing with this young mare and there could yet be a major pedigree update for the family within the next few years.
